CES Day 1 – Midday Report

Finished the North Hall. This year the Tech Zone and other gadgets that were at the Sands last year were located here. The gaming zone which was in the south hall last year was also here. All appeared to have a much lower turnout than the year before. The small electronics manufacturers from Korea and other Asian countries moved here as well. I didn’t have a chance to look through their wares, but might stop by later or tomorrow if there’s time.

Starting the attack on the Central Hall and will get back to it now that I’ve finished lunch. On the way back will check out the Innovation Awards booth to see what gadgets are worth seeing.

There’s a lot of “Green Technology” things here at the show. A lot of solar and protable electromechanical chargers. PowerMat, a cordless charging technology was much bigger this year than at last year’s show.

While 3D television is certainly all the buzz with demonstrations from LG, Samsung and others, I can’t say that I’m at all impressed with it. 3D isn’t new and while the technology itself may be new to consumer televisions, I don’t find it innovative as it still requires special 3D glasses and specially formatted 3D content. To me it’s just a repackaged version of 3D tech that Nvidia was showing last year with their video cards (which by the way they’re still showing this year).

Microsoft is blasting everyone with Xbox and Windows 7, while Intel is showing off the latest dual core Atom processors. Haven’t seen a lot of tablets or smartbooks yet, but we still have A LOT of ground to cover.
